Role

As Associate Head of School for Teaching and Learning i have overall School responsibility for : Quality Assurance, Periodic Review, Programme Development and Approval, Annual Programme Monitoring and liaising with external examiners. I am responsible for leading and coordinating the development of the School curriculum.  

I am also responsible for chairing Subject Assessment Panels and both Postgraduate and Undergraduate Award and Progression Boards for the School/Faculty. I chair the Academic Dishonesty/Offences Committee for the School, the student extenuating circumstances committee and i also have a role in ensuring student complaints are addressed appropriately.

I am a member of the School Executive Team and thereby involved in the determination of School policies and strategies across a wide range of subject matter.

I represent the School on Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee.

I act as both Chair and Panel member on Programme Approval events for programmes in other Faculties within the University.

As a separate but current role i am also the Programme Manager for the B.Sc in Business Management.  This programme has been accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

 

Qualifications & background

Degrees/Professional Qualification

University College Cardiff. 1964-69

1967 B. Sc. Econ. Obtained Upper Second in 1967. Main subjects: Law and Accountancy

1968 Post Grad. Diploma in Personnel Management, Sept. 1968 which also conferred Graduate Membership of the Institute of Personnel Management.

1973 M.Sc. Econ. by research.

Thesis Title: A study of the levels and sources of job satisfaction among bus drivers and bus conductors. Superviser Prof. George Thomason.

Present and previous positions:
- 2010 Associate Head of School of Management.

· Sept. 2002 Head of Subject Group HRS group.

· Jan. 1999. Appointed Academic Group Leader of the Human Resource Studies Group.

· 1985-present: Plymouth Polytechnic, latterly the University of Plymouth.

Initially temporary and part-time, permanent since 1988-9.

· 1977-82 British Film Institute. Personnel Manager and subsequently Head of Personnel and Administrative Services.

· 1974-77 Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS)-Industrial Relations Officer/Senior Industrial Relations Officer.

· 1973-74 Commission on Industrial Relations (CIR) -Industrial Relations Officer.

· 1970-73 Portsmouth Polytechnic- Lecturer I and II in Economics and Industrial Relations.

 



Research interests

Currently my main research interests include the;

· EU Social Dimension,
· HRM policies and practices in Egypt and in Multinational Organisations with particular reference to issues of diffusion and convergence
. Issues of Social Sustainability in Supply Chains and with particular reference to MNCs.

 

Research degrees awarded to supervised students
I have supervised as Director of Studies 5 successful Ph.D and 1 M.Phil. students, topics have included; team effectiveness and quality of work life issues in Egypt, Human resource management practices in Taiwan, employee commitment and trust in the NHS and training needs analysis.
I have also acted as Ph.D. examiner.
