I have designed and teach modules on Social Theory at undergraduate level, stage 2 and 3, and at postgraduate level, Philosophy and Methodology of the Social Sciences, MSc Social Research. I teach a stage 2 module on Culture and Social Identity, and a third year option on Art and Society. I also contribute to modules on Gender, Globalisation, and to a range of stage 1 modules, Sociological Imaginations, Key Concepts and Skills for Sociology and Introduction to the Social Sciences. I have supervised undergraduate dissertations on a wide range of topics: health, student politics, popular culture, consumption, and advertising. I have supervised PhDs on environmental behaviour and art practice, and cultural policy and artistic careers (AHRC funded) I am available for undergraduate and postgraduate supervision and have a special interest in the following topics: Social Theory Prosocial Behavior Creative Industries and Gender Inequality Globalization Economic Sociology Sociology of Culture Sociology of Art Research interests I am currently conducting research in the following projects: -Organizational structures and prosocial behavior I am currently conducting research on how organizational styles of leadership and management impact prosocial behavior with a focus on giving time (volunteering) and giving money (philanthropy). The cultural industries A consultancy project funded by the Yorkshire Air Museum is the basis of a study on leadership and its impact on volunteering. Other partners linked to this project are the National Railway Museum and the York Museums Trust. Higher Education My research on philanthropy focuses on the Higher Education sector, with a comparison between old and new universities. It looks at the importance of integration, solidarity and emotional bonding in encouraging and increasing existing levels of prosociality, and the effects these have on the reformulation of managerial practices and leadership styles. -Leadership, gender and organizational cultures Globalization and gendered leadership: UK and Hong Kong I am the Principal Investigator in a British Academy funded project (2011-13) on the gender dynamics of the organizational cultures of art businesses in Hong Kong and the UK. Dr. Ling-Yun Tang, from the University of Hong Kong is co-investigator in this project. Publications
