Role

Brief outline of my role:

  • Lead the strategic development of University Web Services, Intranet and Extranet
  • Manage the technical web team
  • Proactively stimulate and initiate participation in the development of institutional web strategy
  • Collaborate with senior colleagues across the University in order to plan, develop and deliver University wide web services

Our Teaching and learning system (Tulip) is underpinned by SharePoint 2010. Projects are in progress to consolidate the underpinnings of both our University Website and Intranet to SharePoint 2010 as well.

September 2007 - completed implementation of Microsoft SharePoint 2007 technologies to underpin a new teaching and learning system (Tulip). This has provided feature rich web sites for programmes and modules, giving access to tools enabling collaboration and interactivity e.g. blogs, wikis etc.

Autumn 2007 - Summer 2008, additional functionality and refinement of the teaching and learning sites, plus initial work to underpin the re development of the current intranet, communities etc. Staff personal professional pages (PPP's) have been updated and Staff MySites introduced. Specification and development of an electronic coursework submission system has taking place and a basic podcasting tool implemented. User requirements gathering achieved for video conferencing / web conferencing / web casting, e-portfolios / pdp and peer assessment.

Autumn 2008 - Summer 2009. Major achievements include the piloting of SCOLAR, the electronic feedback and coursework submission system, the piloting of desk based video conferencing and implementation of PebblePad as the e-portfolio system for the University. Specification and development has enabled external access to Tulip sites. Underpinning research and specification has taken place on the new intranet design. A model of approach has been agreed, the underpinning governance now needs to be developed.

Autumn 2009 - Summer 2010. Completed a major technical upgrade of the teaching and learning system (Tulip) to SharePoint 2010. A review of the structure of sites has led to single persistent sites for programmes and modules, with the previous default 3yr archive approach now being devolved to individuals to manage within their own sites. Full implementation of the electronic feedback and coursework submission, linking of timetables etc. have all taken place. All Tulip sites have the ability make their site externally visible and are able to invite external people to participate. A new University wide audio and video service has been specified and is currently in development, it will have the ability to feed iTunesU. The e-portfolio system has been upgraded to PebblePad 2.5 and has single sign on available from the University intranet.

Autumn 2010 - Summer 2011. Developments include the ability to integrate PebblePad with Turnitin and additional developments to both Tulip and Scolar are taking place following feedback from Faculties & Schools. The Intranet replacement project has a new chair and is now active. Phase 1 of the redevelopment of the University website has been delivered, implementing the new branding and redeveloping undergraduate course pages, these new elements are underpinned by SharePoint 2010. New Research collaborative sites are active in pilot form. UPmedia the university wide media repository is now live and underpins Tulip, Extranet and Intranet. Emily, PCMD teaching & learning system, has been moved from Blackboard to SharePoint 2010 - Summer 2011.

Autumn 2011 - Summer 2012. Developments include continuing the complete redevelopment of our University Website, updating both content and underpinning technology. Self service collaborative sites are being released in March providing support for Research and Business to enable them to create their own websites and invite non University members to be part of it. Work is underway to enable Tulip to work with RLOs and Scolar will be able to integrate its marks into the student records system by summer. A lot of work had been undertaken on UPmedia which now enables videos to be visible from any device, ensuring optimum presentation and speed.
