Sociology Lecturer (0.5)
I have been teaching social science undergraduate students since 1990 and am passionate about my work. It is a privilege to work alongside students throughout their studies, and witness, year after year, the transformative potential that education offers. As an alumni of the University of Plymouth I am appreciative of how my own studies here in the 1980s enriched my life. I base my approach on the sociological imagination, and am always inspired by the ways in which this opens up new ways of thinking about our increasingly complex social world.
Sociological inquiry offers the potential to understanding ‘real world’ problems and inequalities. I encourage students to apply their knowledge and experiences to life beyond the campus through engagement with voluntary work, extra-curricula activities and community activism. I am the research co-ordinator of Maker Memories, a community-based heritage project, working in conjunction with The Box, Plymouth. This award winning innovative project is focused on archive and exhibition based research and is capturing the importance of place, music, identity and belonging through interviews, film and photography. I am also a passionate advocate of the importance of grassroots live music venues and the role that music has in creating and sustaining communities. I am involved in various music projects and campaigns that highlight the value that music brings to communities and creating a sense of identity and belonging. I live in Cornwall, and encourage students to make the short trip across the sea to visit the spectacular coastal countryside of the Rame Peninsula.

Research interests
Maker Memories Research Co-ordinator: Maker Memories is a community-led project designed to capture the diverse histories and socio-cultural value of Maker Heights. The project is supported by The Box and working in collaboration with Sociology and Media Arts at the University of Plymouth. The project was awarded Best Overall Community Archive in UK and Ireland and Best Community Engagement Awards in 2019 by the Community Archive and Heritage Group.
