Role

My role as the Widening Participation Student Development Co-ordinator is to develop and deliver a variety of actions, identified within the University of Plymouth’s Institutional Statement on Widening Participation and institutional operational plan (updated annually), I am based in a dynamic centralised Widening Participation team. Activities relate in particular to work with target schools and communities in the Peninsula and wider South West region. Face to face mentoring is a valued initiative that I deliver to schools in Plymouth, it involves undergraduate students mentoring key stage 4 learners in the school environment weekly over an academic year.  The aim of this is to raise the aspirations and self esteem of the learners and to encourage a positive attitude to education; this is carried out by using positive role models in the form of trained student ambassadors.  This is an extremely important process for the school, the learners, the community and for the undergraduates.

I recruit, select, employ and supervise a large numbers of University students, within a variety of roles, these students are integral to a lot of the project work that is offered across the university.  I also lead on the development of appropriate models of training and professional development for the student resource within Widening Participation working across the University.  Many of these activities will directly link with the values and ambitions of the University Strategic Plan – Embedding Enterprise 2009 – 2012.

I have recently had a module passed and currently have my first cohort registered on LTSAP002 student ambassador module.  I am extremely happy with this as it is something that I have been aiming to do for a number of years. It gives me immense pleasure to know that the students are able to evidence their development and learning through their employment as a student ambassador with this module.

I run four residential summer schools for groups of young people aged between 15 – 17 from the South West, a primary tutoring programme and several other initiatives such a revision skills and book groups for local secondary and primary schools.

I also line manage the Student Placement Assistant, Widening Participation Assistant (Tutoring) and the Undergraduate Student Ambassadors.
