Role

I retired from Plymouth University on 31 August 2011.

Prior to this I was Associate Professor (Senior Lecturer) in Mental Health, providing academic leadership on mental health and teaching on postgraduate and undergraduate mental health programmes including the MSc Mental Health (Programme Lead since its inception in 2001), undergraduate nursing programmes, the Community Mental Health Nursing course and the IAPT Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner programme.

I trained in general nursing at St George's, London, specialised in operating theatres (including two years in South Africa) and neurosurgery. This was followed by Mental Health training and Community Mental Health Nursing in Bristol. I completed my masters at the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1991. I worked in education from 1986, first at the Avon & Gloucestershire College of Health (latterly UWE), returning to the College of Medicine in Cardiff as a lecturer from 1993-96 with brief secondments in Bucharest and Athens. I moved to the University of Plymouth in 1996.

Professional interests include community mental health; psychotherapy; counselling; psychodrama; personality disorder; personal construct theory / repertory grid technique and mental health policy and legislation. My published work includes book chapters on community psychiatric nursing and mental health nursing, a review of the effectiveness of psychodrama psychotherapy and critical reflections on the use of the Repertory Grid Technique. I was involved in a WHO project in Albania to develop and deliver training for mental health nursing staff in Tirana (2005-6) and Korca (2007). From 2005-2008, I was a member from 2005-2008 of the NICE Guideline Development Group for Prostate Cancer (Guideline published Feb 2008).

After retirement, my wife and I continue to live on the edge of Dartmoor as family flourishes in various parts of the world. I continue to be interested in mental health but also pursue interests in local activities, travel, folk music, developing our garden, sustainable living and securing world peace.

My University email can still be used to contact me personally. However, for University related matters please contact the School Office (sssw@plymouth.ac.uk or phone 01752 586600) for assistance.
