John Pointon is Emeritus Professor of Finance, having worked full-time at Plymouth Business School from 1983 to 2011. Currently, he teaches Quantitative Finance and Methods to his MSc class. He also has interests in blended learning, executive education and microfinance in the third world. Until recently, he was Associate Director of the University's Centre for Maritime Logistics, Economics and Finance. He has also held academic positions at the University of Birmingham, and the University of Aston. He originally trained as a Chartered Accountant with the Manchester office of Thomson McLintock (now KPMG) and subsequently worked for the UK branch of a US multinational.
His research interests into corporate finance have led to publications with colleagues based in the UK , Germany, Egypt and Australia, covering a range of issues, including: international shipping, bank credit scoring, the risk premium, the cost of capital, dividend policies, capital structure, tax systems, capital investment, share prices, share buy-backs, inflation, technological change, exchange rate risk, expropriation risk, and finance leasing.

Roles on external bodies
Methodist Local Preacher within the Plymouth and Devonport circuit.
Trustee/director of New Life Fellowship Plymouth, a Christian church fellowship located at Widewell and whose aim is to proclaim the full gospel of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour within the community.
