My research areas are in Neonatal, Paediatric and Adult Intensive Care; Emergency Medicine; Family-Centred Care; End of Life; Patient and Family Reported Outcomes; Quality of Care; Aging and Dementia. My expertise in research designs are: 1) quantitative research methods such as Randomised Controlled Trials and survey studies; 2) qualitative research methods such as Grounded Theory, Phenomenology and Ethnography; 3) mixed methods research.

I have published widely; see my papers under the heading ‘publications’. In November 2022 I was appointed Associate Editor of the new journal Intensive Care Medicine - Paediatric and Neonatal. Other Associate Editor positions are with Frontiers in Pediatrics, Florence Nightingale Journal of Nursing, and Frontiers in Psychology. I am also an International Editorial Board member of several other international peer-reviewed journals.
In October 2022 I was elected the Chair of the Ethics Section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the first nurse holding an office in the Society's history.
