Biography
Biography
Jamie is a PhD student in Biomedical Sciences. He works in the mitochondrial biology team, supervised by Dr Jane Carré, Dr Michael Wilde and Dr Charlie Affourtit. He is exploring the relationship between mitochondrial function and metabolomic profiles, in clinical conditions where loss of muscle mass and function are prevalent.
Previously, Jamie worked as a research technician in the University of Exeter, supporting nutritional research in human health and exercise performance. There he developed an interest in bioenergetics of skeletal muscle, picking up skills in biochemical analyses, including immunohistochemistry and mitochondrial respiration. His work has contributed to knowledge of fatigue, ergogenic aids for athlete performance, and muscle growth/maintenance. Related topics include the influence of the oral microbiome on factors related to metabolism.
He hopes that in studying metabolism at a cellular level, he will develop his understanding of muscle bioenergetics, and lead to translational work in the field of sarcopenia.
Qualifications
Jamie studied at the University of Wales, Bangor, where he completed a BSc in Sports Science, and an MSc in Exercise Physiology. There he conducted dissertation studies in the field of exercise immunology, looking at the effects of endurance exercise at environmental extremes and muscosal/systemic immune function.
