Research interests

Research

I have a number of research interests including exploring the links between research and teaching, student use of technology for learning and qualitative methods in educational research. However, my main research interest is Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). I have becoming increasingly interested in informal learning for ESD and how links can be made between students’ informal experiences and the formal curriculum. Running parallel to this I am interested in staff and student resistance to ESD and the way that ESD is communicated (or not) through staff development in universities.

Recently I have worked on a number of pedagogic research projects.

2008 – Issues facing progression students in their transfer to Higher Education Institutions

2008 – Student use of technology for learning – exploring the interface between formal and informal use

2009/2010 – Evaluating Research informed Teaching at Plymouth University

2009 - A Sustainable Campus? Students’ Perspectives of Informal: Learning about Sustainability

2011- Transformative learning for sustainability in HE: Exploring diverse student experiences

Research funding:

Teaching

My primary employment is as an Educational Developer with the Educational Development team.  I teach on the General Teaching Associates (GTA) a short course about teaching and learning designed for postgraduate students and the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) course. I also contribute to staff CPD through workshops on a range of educational themes including ESD, the new Plymouth Student Award, qualitative research methods and research informed teaching.

I am also an Associate Lecturer in the School of Geography, University of Plymouth. My geographical research specialises in young people’s understandings and interactions with environmental issues and sustainable development, particularly the relationship between ESD and non-educational ‘lifestyle’ influences (peers, media, families, and experiences). My interest in ESD as a motivational strategy to inspire commitment to sustainable development is reflected in my teaching, which focuses on the merits of ESD with students and the role of the public as citizens and consumers.
