Role
Dr Huirong Le is Associate Professor and REF2014 Subject Co-ordinator in Mechanical, Marine and Materials Engineering at the University of Plymouth, UK. He is a member of the Advanced Materials and Engineering Systems' Group, School of Marine Science and Engineering. He has supervised, and is supervising a number of postdoc RA, PhD, MPhil and MSc candidates. He is actively involved in international research networking in advanced materials and tribology.

Dr Le has considerable experience in ceramic-polymer nanocomposites, surface engineering and tribology through his research posts at Cambridge University and industrial collaborations. His current research interests include advanced surface coatings for offshore structures, ceramic-polymer nanocomposites for biomedical implants, mechanics of composites and tribology in mechanical design. He has attracted about £600k of research funding from EPSRC, Royal Society, TSB and industrial collaborators in recent years. He has published two book chapters, one book review and over 60 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings. He is Editorial Board Member of one international journal, referee for a dozen of prestigious journals in tribology, materials science and engineering. He has acted as Session Chair for NanoMedicine conferences and International Conference on Composites Engineering.

Dr Le is a member of IMechE and a Chartered Engineer. He has been involved in R&D activities for oil & gas, aerospace, automotive and metal forming industries through consultancy, knowledge transfer partnerships and industrial CASE studentships for over 15 years.  

Qualifications & background

Qualifications:

BEng in Materials Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, China.

PhD in Advanced Ceramics Composites, Tsinghua University, China.

Research Experience:

1997 - 2000    Research Associate at Cambridge University Engineering Department working on EPSRC projects in mechanics and tribology of metal forming

2000 - 2005    Senior Research Associate at Cambridge University Engineering Department working on EPSRC projects in surface finish and lubrication of metal forming

2005 - 2010     Lecturer & BEng Programme Leader in mechanical engineering and design at Dundee University.  Developed a number of projects in design of microsystems, mechanics and tribology in design of tubular connections, advanced surface coatings, funded by EPSRC CASE, Royal Society Research Grant, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and Industries.

2010 - present    Associate Professor in Materials and Mechanical Engineering, School of Marine Science and Engineering, University of Plymouth.
