Teaching interests

My teaching covers several areas including analytical chemistry, foundation chemistry, environmental science fieldwork at the undergraduate and postgraduate level for B.Sc. Environmental Science, and B.Sc. Chemistry. I have qualified for the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) Certificate.

I have an ongoing interest in the interface between Arts and Science and how this can be used to further teaching and learning. I have collaborated with Christine Hall, a plywright in the Faculty of Arts, on a number of projects funded by the Higher Education Academy and UoP on affective learning in science. As a result of this collaboration we have published a play, Holey Terror, a narrative approach to the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

I have edited or contributed to six books on analytical chemistry for teaching and research, including a self learning text in Analytical Atomic Spectrometry, which is the primary text book for undergraduate courses in atomic spectrometry on the Chemistry degree. I have also co-authored a monograph for the Royal Society of Chemistry on Inductively Coupled and Microwave Induced Plasma Sources for Mass Spectrometry, which is used as a tutorial guide and reference for postgraduate teaching and researchers in the field, and contributed to Ullman's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry.

Research interests
My research interests include the development of instrumentation and methods for atomic and molecular analysis. One major theme is the application of liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry for elemental speciation and isotopic analysis. A second theme is the development of low cost instrumentation for environmental monitoring.

I am the author or co-author of over 60 publications, 10 books, and numerous conference presentations; a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry, Analytica Chimica Acta, Applied Spectroscopy Reviews and Atomic Spectrometry Updates; and have helped organise several national and international conferences. I was awarded the Hilger Spectroscopy Prize in 1994, and was the year 2000 recipient of the SAC Silver Medal awarded by the Royal Society of Chemistry. I have been awarded nearly £1M in research funding over the last 10 years from a vairiety of sources, including the Research Councils, UK Industry and Government. I have successfully supervised 10 PhD students and 5 postdoctoral fellows.
