Research interests

My research interests include spintronics, nanomagnetism, magnetic thin films and devices, magnetic data storage technology, and spintronic biosensors.

Research facilities based in the Wolfson Magnetics Laboratory

The Wolfson Nanotechnology Laboratory at Plymouth University is a cleanroom based lab for leading edge research in nano-spintronics, computer memory and data storage technology, nano-functional materials and biosensors. The main facilities we have include

  • A Nordiko 9550 spintronic deposition tool - six targets, load-locked with 4 inch wafer process capability.
  • A complete suite of microfabrication facility including mask aligner, phtoresistor spinner, ion miller for device fabrications.
  • Nano-R Atomic Force Microscope for nanoscale metrology
  • Fully computer controlled magnetic and magnetoptransport measurement instrument for high and low field measurements.
  • Magnetic field annealing facility.
Summary of research capabilities
  • Deposition of spin valves and magnetic tunnel junctions with MgO tunnel barrier for data storage, computer memory (MRAM)  and spintronic biosensor applications.
  • Deposition of nanoscale multi-layers on semiconductors for the study of spin transport in semiconductor materials.
  • Microfabrication of magnetic, spintronic and spintronic biosensors.
  • Measurement of films thickness by AFM down to nm accuracy.
  • Nano-scale characterisation of micro-fabricated devices.
  • M(H), MR(H) and spin torque measurement for magnetic, spintronic and biomedical devices.
