Roles on external bodies Editorial board member (2001-2007) The World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Kluwer academic publishers. Teaching interests Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
I have an active interest in the research and use of novel teaching and assessment methods within my subject area. I am especially interested in problems of the delivery of advanced molecular microbiological techniques to larger student groups. Staff serving as external examiners External examiner (1999-2004), Edexcel HNC/D Applied Biology, School of Pharmacy & Biomolecular Sciences, University of Brighton. Research interests
• The development of novel and rapid indicators of human pathogens in marine bathing waters and "out of season" risks to surfers and bathers. This has led to studies on the faecal bacterium Bacteroides fragilis and its bacteriophages. • The modification and control of marine and freshwater biofilms: including water delivery systems. • The microbial skin and gut flora of fishes, especially in response to pre- and probiotic feeds and spoilage situations.
