Research interests
Primary research interests surround the integration of sustainable development into governance frameworks. There is a particular emphasis on the relationship between increased environmental risk and the uptake of sustainable development within the United Nations as well as connecting this to local governance structures. Gregory's most recent research explores the integration of sustainable development into local communities with a focus on town and parish councils. The work examines local government and local communities response to global risks such as climate change. Other academic activities
Academic work focuses on the integration of sustainable development into governance frameworks. There is an emphasis on understanding sustainable development in the context of a risk society and second/ reflexive modern interpretations of the concept. Attention is also paid to evolving fields of complexity theory and ecological modernisation.
My work engages with issues such as the role of science in society, the nature of risk and the publics understanding of climate change. Ideas of globalization are also considered. My work ties together the global and local areas of analysis from the United Nations and the European Union through to local government and local communities. My interests also include the effect that global climate change is having on governance structures and the ways that adaptation and mitigation issues are being developed. Gregory's work has been published internationally. His book 'Sustainable Development: The Reflexive Governance of Risk is due for publication in 2009.
Theoretical debates are applied to practical areas. For example, i indepth knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessments, Sustainability Assessments, Strategic Environmental Assessment as well as legal and regulatory frameworks that apply to these areas. I has advised local authority, third sector and private sector organizations on various related areas. As a Chartered Environmentalist and a Member of the Institute of Environmental Science Imaintains the highest professional standards and excellence in all of his work.
