Emma Rendle is currently working as a PhD research student at the University of Plymouth, UK. The title of her research is “The environmental and socio-economic impacts of Artificial Surfing Reefs – the UK experience”. She holds a multidisciplinary background with specific interest in coastal processes, beach geomorphology and shoreline response. Emma has commercial experience in developing optimised design solutions in support of coastal protection and amenity enhancement structures.

Self-employed as a Marine and Coastal Environment Consultant she specialised in the development of innovative offshore structures for shoreline protection. Looking at the use of soft technologies in exchange for the typical hard structures. Coastal surveying, reporting and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) conducted. Contracts India, NZ and UK.

Emma worked for Metoc Plc. where she specialised in the assessment of environmental risk and environmental design for the waste water, dredging and oil and gas industries.  Experience was gained in dealing with a range of environmental issues from the perspective of surveyors, operators, developers and regulators.  She worked in developing optimised environmental designs solutions to support both capital developments and operational performance improvement.  Emma holds a broad range of skills relating to the physical and biological marine environment including sediment dynamics, coastal processes, hydrographic data collation and interpretation, multi-dimensional mathematical modelling and GIS.

Research interests

My specific research interests lie in the use of Multi-purpose Artificial Soft Reefs (M-ASRs) for shoreline protection, tourism enhancement and ecological enrichment. Impacts to the local environment will be temporal and spatial, studies to fully realise these alterations to beach processes will need to include sediment investigations, macrotidal beach morphology, rip current identification and assessment, high-energy beach development, and long-term patterns in morphology. The social and economic impacts that can arguably benefit or prove detrimental to fisheries and tourism is of particular interest concerning artificial offshore structures.

Marine geomorphology, coastal processes, shoreline management and coastal protection initiatives.
