Role

Programme tutor – BA Photography

Member of 'Land/Water and the Visaul Arts' Research Group.

My interest in photography began within the context of art history and has been developed since 1982 through various curatorial roles in museums and galleries. Now I work principally as a writer, editor and curator, in the fields of contemporary photography, photographic history and the visual arts. This work often stems from a close association with photographers, artists and organisations, either professionally as a commissioner of projects, or more generally as a participant in the processes of making and thinking about work. Collaboration is, therefore, an important principle and activity in all my work, as is an enthusiasm for cross-disciplinary projects that bring together distinct disciplines and experiences. These ideas were a driving force behind my role as Director of Photoworks from 1997 to 2010, where, among other things, I initiated a major series of site-based commissions and over thirteen years worked closely with a range of very different photographers and artists. The ideas have also informed my activities as a publisher of photographic books, especially at Photoworks, and I have developed a particular interest in the practice and process of book making, something underpinned by the firm belief in the book as a primary site for the photographic image.

Recent collaborations include, Dark Formations, and audio/visual project with the composer Ed Hughes, which explores through archival imagery drawn largely from the Imperial war Museum, the allied bombing of Germany during the final years of World War II. An introductory piece from this project was premiered at King's Place in London in September 2010.
Other collaborative projects with artists, as a writer, include recent essays on the work of Paul Graham, in particular as part of his survey monograph published by SteidlMack in 2009; with Jem Southam on his book Clouds Descending published by The Lowry, Manchester in 2008; with David Spero on his project Settlements, and with Helen Sear on her forthcoming monograph to be published by Ffotogallery, Cardiff.

Research interests
My practice revolves arounda critical engagement with photography as a writer, curator and editor. I havealways been interested in locating photography within wider social and culturalcontexts, and in relation to history and the traditions of art. Butincreasingly the focus of my practice is a response to the making ofphotographic work itself, as a complex blend of ideas and experience. In this the disciplines of curating, editing, and, especially for me, writing, developfrom a sustained dialogue with photographers and are part of a collaborativeprocess.
