Qualifications & background

Graduated from University of Cardiff, Wales with a

first class B.A joint hons degree in French and Spanish

Subsequently awarded a Ph.D from the University of Cardiff, Wales entitled 'Zola's women: the power of the powerless'

1989-92 Part-time lecturing at the University of Cardiff

1992 -2011 Lecturer in French and Spanish (ab-initio-GCSE level), at the University of Plymouth

The Aizen - Association Internationale de Recherches Multidisciplinaires et d’Etudes Comparées: Emile Zola et son Temps (Canada).

Aspects of nineteenth century French society, in particular:
 

  • the history of nineteenth century costume and fabrics 
  • the role and growth of the department store
  • growing old / old-age in latter-day nineteenth century France
  • the role of women in nineteenth century society and their depiction in literature of the period

The novels of Emile Zola, in particular:

  • the representation of women in Les Rougon-Macquart
  • flower poetics
