Role

I am a first year PhD student in the School of Marine Science and Engineering and within the Coastal Processes Research Group. The title of my project is   'Sediment Transport & Beach Erosion Induced by Rip Currents', it is a NERC funded studentship. My supervisors are Jon Miles, Gerd Masselink & Paul Russell.

Qualifications & background
2006 - 2009:  Bsc Environmental Science, Plymouth University

Project: The effect of dumping of dredged spoil within Whitsand Bay, Cornwall

Teaching interests

Undergraduate: First year Ocean Sience/Marine Geoscience field week (beach profiling)

Research interests

Rip currents are recognised to provide an important contribution to coastal circulation patterns, but the fundamental processes linking sediment transport in rips to beach erosion remain poorly understood. Initial measurements of sediment transport in rip currents suggest that they have the potential to transport significant amounts of sediment offshore, however, measurements of sediment transport processes in rips are particularly limited, due to the practical difficulties in making measurements in these conditions.

The main objective of the project is to quantify the amount of sand taken offshore as a result of rip currents in a variety of conditions. New measurements of bedload transport will be made by using bedform dynamics as a surrogate.
