Qualifications & background

I am a contemporary artist, an architect and an educator. Originally from ‘Up-North’, I grew up in the South West. After obtaining RIBA part 2 (distinction) and being awarded the runner up prize for the RIBA silver medal awards in 1988, I qualified as an architect at the Architectural Asociation in 1991. Following 10 years working as an architect in Cambridge, Bath, and Bristol I returned to Plymouth in 2001 to take up a full time lectureship and to develop my creative arts practice. Since 2002 I have also held a Post Graduate Certificate for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

All of my work aims to engage with the underlying ambiguities and tensions of everyday life – both as a way to reveal them and their poetic content, and as a means to come to terms with them. I am an idealist - I still think that architecture and art are a means for supporting and enriching our everyday lives. As a result I am interested in ideas of ‘quality’, ‘experiential aesthetics’, skill / craft, phenomenological method, and qualitative enquiries into popular and material culture and identity.
