Plymouth University has world-leading reputations in the research areas of marine and coastal, technology, computer science, environmental, economic and social sustainability, creative and cultural economies, health, nursing and biomedicine, and pedagogic research/innovation. The University has leapt 15 places to join the top 50 UK universities in research performance, results showing that overall, 80% of our research was judged as being of international repute.

For further information about our vision, mission, values and research strategy see our internal strategies and policies section.

The results of the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE08) carried out by the Higher Education Funding Council for England show that the majority of areas submitted by the university included world-leading research, achieving the highest rating possible - scoring 4 stars.

Key highlights include:

  • 80% of the research judged as being of international repute
  • In 18 of the 25 areas submitted we were judged to have world-leading research
  • The university submitted nearly 400 staff to RAE08 - a 70% increase on the RAE01 submission, reflecting the increasing importance of research to the university's mission
  • Computer science, civil engineering, geography, environmental science and medicine at Plymouth ranked alongside these areas at leading research universities
  • Tremendous improvement in key areas such as business, education and nursing
  • Plymouth leapt 15 places to join the top 50 universities in Research Fortnight's power table, showing the greatest improvement of any university since the RAE01. See Research Fortnight's Power Table.
  • Plymouth submitted its research in 25 subject areas - only 30 of the 116 universities in the RAE put forward a broader range of subjects for assessment.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Wendy Purcell:

"Plymouth's results are fantastic. They show that the university is undertaking world-leading research of global significance across the vast majority of our research areas and that our students work alongside world-class experts. We are proud to be among the most highly rated universities in the UK for computer science, social work, education and health. This is excellent news not just for us but for the economy of the South West. Research underpins our enterprise mission and undertaking research of international relevance is key to our future."
