Open day makes a splash at Mount Batten Centre

29 March 2004

People of all ages and abilities are in for an informative, fun-packed day of activities on - and off - the water at the forthcoming open day at Plymouth's Mount Batten Centre, the South West's premier sailing and watersports facility.

Between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 3 April, the Mount Batten Centre will kick off its new season of activities, which range from sailing, canoeing, gig rowing and wakeboarding to angling, climbing and orienteering, with plenty in between.

An ideal start to the schools' Easter vacation, the open day will give visitors the opportunity to view the Centre's impressive facilities and try many of the activities free of charge - half-hour 'taster sessions' will be provided on a first come, first served basis and are expected to be very popular! (Parental consent will be required for under 18s who want to try out the watersports on offer.)

Visitors will be able to meet representatives from the Plymouth Outdoor Education Centre, which is based at Mount Batten, and groups including the University of Plymouth's Recreation Service and Students' Union, and the leading UK charity for disabled sailing, Sailability, as well as affiliate clubs of the Mount Batten Centre. These include the Port of Plymouth Canoe Club, the Cattewater Gig Club, Plym Yacht Club, Plymouth Sound Diving Club and Plymouth Youth Sailing.

For those keen to relax on dry land, the Mount Batten Centre provides the ideal location for sitting back and savouring not just the breathtaking views of Plymouth Sound, but the food and drink available in the Centre's bar and restaurant.

The Mount Batten Centre is easily accessible by car, bus or water taxi from the Barbican.

Charles Howeson, Chair of the Mount Batten Centre, said: "We are on the threshold of exciting changes at the Centre, and in the forefront of watersports delivery and coaching. I welcome the open day, which is being organised with our partners at the university and the city."
