Research in the School of Engineering
The School of Engineering has active research and industrially relevant Technology Transfer activity including Consultancy.
All staff of the School are involved in research in some way. This research activity means that staff remain aware of current developments in their respective specialised areas and hence informs both postgraduate and undergraduate teaching within the School.
RAE2008: Faculty overview Research in the Faculty of Technology has been independently assessed in the recent national evaluation of UK academia (RAE2008). Averaged over the faculty, over 80% of research activity was assessed as being at internationally recognised, with a third of the total being rated internationally excellent or world-leading. The assessors also noted active cross-disciplinary research and links with industry. This performance has contributed significantly to the University of Plymouth being ranked in the top 50 UK universities for research by the national league tables published by Research Fortnight.
Civil & Coastal Engineering (RAE2008 Unit of Assessment 27) Research at the Coastal Engineering Research Group has recently been independently assessed in the national evaluation of UK academia (RAE2008). Overall, 100% of the research outputs were judged to be at least internationally recognised, with over 70% being internationally excellent or world leading. Ranked by the proportion of 4* research activity this puts Plymouth 11th amongst UK universities for civil engineering research.
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (RAE2008 Unit of Assessment 28) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering research at Plymouth has been assessed by peer review in the UK-wide 2008 Research Assessment Exercise as being internationally excellent. Overall 80% of the work in the unit was either internationally excellent or internationally recognised and all of the research was judged as having national recognition. The Unit contains researchers with Internationally Leading 4* esteem and has access to facilities ranked as Internationally Leading.
