The Vice-Chancellor's welcome

Professor Wendy PurcellBy Professor Wendy Purcell
Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive

Welcome to the University of Plymouth. We are dynamic and ambitious and take great pride in the spirit of creativity and innovation - marking us out as the enterprise university.

We are focused on delivering an outstanding student experience both through the curriculum we deliver and all the associated opportunities we offer such as work placements, volunteering schemes, international exchange programmes, career development and an extensive range of cultural, sports and leisure opportunities.

The university is located at the heart of the city of Plymouth and plays a key role in the city's cultural, economic and social life. We are developing strong links with businesses and professional communities across the South West and our initiatives, such as Formation Zone support local business and help develop new innovative ideas.

As a Plymouth graduate myself, I am particularly proud of our strong record and external recognition of excellence in both teaching and research. We are a national pilot for two-year degrees, have 12 National Teaching Fellows, host the national subject centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and the Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education - as well as four government-funded Centres for Excellence in Teaching & Learning.

Our rapidly developing national and international research profile attracts significant funds annually to support research by staff and we supervise a large number of PhD and postgraduate students. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, confirmed that we carry out world-leading research in the vast majority of our research areas. Overall, 80% of our research was judged as of international repute. Our students can be proud to work alongside world-class experts.

Plymouth is an inspirational and vibrant city and the University of Plymouth is a great university committed to responsible business practice. I hope that you find what you are looking for on our website. If you do need any further information, please let us know and we will do our best to help. The enterprise university
