Art, Design, Media & Performance

Courses
The Faculty of Arts offers a wide range of exciting courses across Art & Design, Media and Performance disciplines at both undergraduate and postgraduate (taught and research) level. These are high-quality student centred degrees that prepare for the challenges and opportunities that arise in these fast-moving cultural industries.

Interdisciplinary research and practice-led learning
Personal ambition is consistently built upon and focused within the courses. We encourage and foster cross - and interdisciplinary research and practice and value both traditional and practice-led forms of learning.

Location
Courses also benefit from being based in the architecturally stunning Roland Levinsky building and the redesigned Scott building accommodation with facilities including large and airy performance spaces, studios and well equipped workshops, computing facilities and editing suites, professional photography studios and galleries. Some students will also have the opportunity to work and exhibit in the historic Royal William Yard, one of the country’s most important icons of naval architecture.

Cultural quarter
The Faculty of Arts provides a new dynamic gateway to the cityscape of Plymouth and as an academic community we also make a significant contribution to the developing cultural quarter of the city and the region. Students and staff also benefit from being based at the Roland Levinsky Building; fast becoming the centre of the Arts world within the South West. Our thriving community blurs the distinctions between scholarly, artistic, creative and professional activities:

  • the seasonal programmes of Peninsula Arts , run by the Faculty of Arts, bring a wide range of national and international talent to the city with an extensive range of cutting-edge public exhibitions, concerts and lectures. It enjoys a successful partnership with regional and city-wide musical and arts organisations, including the Theatre Royal Plymouth, Ten Tors Orchestra and the Plymouth Arts Centre;
  • the Formation Zone, a business incubation service for those wishing to start new, cultural or creative businesses is also based with the Roland Levinsky Building. It helps turn creative ideas into business success. It provides space, support, profile, IT, resources and events to enable creative people in Plymouth to start and build successful businesses.
