The 'connectivity' of older people living in rural areas.

Wednesday 14th March 2012 1-2pm
Ray Jones and Catherine Hennessy

In this online session we will pick some selected findings from a multi-centre study called ‘The Grey and Pleasant Land’ project as the basis for discussion about older people’s role in rural society. Discussion of these topics will be on Twitter using #puwebcast. At some points we will use Twitter ‘break out rooms’ (nests?!) for discussion but we will give instructions during the session. The session is open to anyone. You will need a PC that plays sound and is able to run Windows Media Player to receive the videostream. Start logging on at 12.50pm to make sure that you are ready to go at 1pm (UK time).

What you have to do:

  1. Before Wednesday 14th March, sign up for Twitter at www.twitter.com . (Don't worry, you don't have to be swamped by tweets, you don't have to see any unless you want to log in). (If you don’t want to take part in the discussions but just watch the videostream, you can do that without signing up for Twitter).
  2. Before Wednesday 14th March, check that your computer can play the webcast videostream http://video.plymouth.ac.uk/webcast2
  3. At 12.50pm on Wednesday 14th March, if you only have a desktop PC or laptop you will need to open two browser windows in one go to http://video.plymouth.ac.uk/webcast2 as the URL on your browser . This is the webcast videostream. There should be some music playing or something.
  4. In the other browser window log in to http://tweetchat.com. (If you have a smart phone or tablet you might want to do it on your separate device).
  5. Sign in using your Twitter detailsType puwebcast into the Tweetchat box (following on from the # sign already there) at the top. All the recent tweets with #puwebcast in the message will appear
  6. If you want to add something to the discussion just type in the box.
  7. We will be using break out nests – we will tell you how to go to your nest during the session.
