Enterprise in Cornwall Award - overall winner

Claire Massey, University of Plymouth Students' Union (UPSU)

ViP (Volunteering in Plymouth), the student-led UPSU volunteering society, has 1007 members supporting 18 projects, including Claire's unique Rural Stations Project (RSP). A collaboration between UPSU, Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership (DCRP), First Great Western (FGW) and Network Rail (NR), under Claire's leadership RSP provides a range of regeneration and conservation projects at neglected rural railway stations in Cornwall - the only university/rail partnership collaboration in the country.

268 students, 6 UPSU staff, 3 FGW, 3 NR and 1 DCRP staff members have participated in 13 flexible and accessible projects during 2008/09 academic year including regenerating a section of canal next to the line, creating wildlife areas, installing planters, re-painting signal boxes and constructing raised beds.

Whilst breaking down preconceptions of students, the project encourages students' physical exercise and employability skills, provides volunteers with knowledge, training and support, improves local rail user experience, enhances environmental cleanliness/attractiveness and the profile of rural branch lines in the local and student community, ensuring their long term sustainability.

This RSP won the Outstanding Project Award at the Higher Education Academy's 2008 Higher Education Volunteer Awards, and 2nd place in the 'Involving Community Groups' category at the 2008 National Community Rail Awards.

Congratulations to the other finalists

Stafford Sumner, Rachel Picken and Toby Parkins, The Hub - special commendation

The Hub is a business network operating in Cornwall, established in January 2003 in response to a feeling that many young people in the county, including those new to business, could be deterred by the more traditional, formal networking groups. The Hub has grown considerably over the last 6 years, now boasting over 700 members and, unlike other networking groups, membership and events are free, funded through in-kind or cash sponsorship. It is a useful source of information and offers a more relaxed environment to start networking, creating lasting relationships between people and organisations in the county with an open, friendly ethos transcending all its networking events.

Run by a committee of volunteers from across Cornwall's business community - some have been committee members for many years, others fresh faces - Hub events happen on the last Thursday every month at locations across Cornwall, each with a themed speaker on topics such finance in the recession, social media, work-life balance and PR.

Its annual awards ceremony celebrates members' success, and as a network the Hub links with organisations such as Business Link, Cornwall College Business and Unlocking Cornish Potential to ensure members can access to up to date information and development opportunities.

Steve Griffin (Cornwall College) and Dr Tanya Ovenden-Hope (University of Plymouth), The ICE House Project

The university's Faculty of Education partnership with Colleges in Cornwall for Post-Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) began in 1984, growing in both programme offer for trainee teachers and number of college partners. In 2007 programmes offered within the PCET partnership were endorsed by Standards Verification UK (SVUK) and in 2010/11 all programmes will be aligned with the Lifelong Learning Sector and local employer needs.

In 2008 an ESF funded Cornish-based collaborative project was approved for developing entrepreneurship and enterprise, utilising PCET programme as a vehicle for change - named The ICE (Innovation and Creativity in Education) House by its creators (Steve and Tanya). Based in Cornwall, it will train teachers, lecturers and trainers to deliver enterprise and entrepreneurship learning to the existing and future workforce in Cornish settings, including schools and colleges, the community and the workplace.

The project focuses on re-thinking teacher training and the growth of new professional development opportunities through innovative high quality training in entrepreneurship education for teachers and other educational professionals. It will demonstrate, sustain and develop enterprise in Cornwall by articulating with new Trust School consortia jointly supported by the University and Cornwall College and being integrated into the Excellence Hub for Gifted and Talented Education (targeting pupils of outstanding potential).
