Postgraduate module in E-Health

 

Further Information and Application Details

This new and innovative module at postgraduate level focused on e-health is a great addition to our portfolio of programmes. It can be taken either as a stand-alone module or as a ten credit optional module in one of our postgraduate programmes. If taken as a stand-alone module the credits can be ‘banked’ for later contribution to one of our Masters programmes (see previous link). This module will be delivered as an online module using webcast seminars, email discussion groups, web and work-based learning. To give students an appreciation of e-health, how information and communication technologies can be used to manipulate information for both population health need assessment and to support patient groups and communities. The sessions are delivered by Professor Ray Jones, Dr Maged Kamel Boulos and Inocencio Maramba. Also visit: E-Health Research Group.

Module details

  • Credits: This module is worth 10 credits at Masters level
  • Assessments: The module will be 50% coursework and 50% examination
  • Module Highlights
    • Understanding e-health and how it can aid public and patient users of computer-based information, including quality and relevance of information
    • Developing a better knowledge of collection, analysis, interpretation and communication of information about health
    • Methods of communication are explored in a variety of location and user group scenarios looking at ethical, legal and practical issues in giving patients access to their electronic records with comparisons between different health services nationally and internationally
    • Advancements and developments in new ICT are explored and how they will impact on the developments of virtual community networks and support those with specific conditions
    • Issues faced in using ICT to communicate and disseminate information about health are explored
    • Issues faced in using ICT to communicate and disseminate information on health promotion and contact with the media are also explored
  • Module Delivery: Each of the ten interactive live webinars will comprise a live video presentation by the lecturer and simultaneous on-line discussion by students
  • Requirements: Students will need a broadband internet connected computer that plays sounds. Students will also be required to carry out other study in between the webinars with activities such as using internet tools to explore health information needs of particular patient or public communities and the quality and relevance of information available.

Entry Requirements

This is a postgraduate module. Applicants should have at least a good first degree or equivalent. Applicants will need to be confidant about using IT and the Internet and be competent users of Internet browsing software, Microsoft Office, bibliographic database such as Medline or Web of Knowledge, and be familiar with general public health issues.
