Photography Gold Medal Award for Computing AcademicRichard Merritt FRPS, a lecturer in Computing in the Faculty of Technology, has been awarded the Gold Medal at the Royal Photographic Society 150th International Print Exhibition, the longest standing exhibition of its kind in the world. Richard has had work selected for this prestigious exhibition in previous years. This year just 125 images which reveal a very broad range of style, genre and technique were selected by an international jury from over 2000 submissions from 33 countries. Each year only one Gold Medal is awarded so Richard was stunned to receive the medal for his image of a Scalloped Hammerhead Shark taken in the waters around the uninhabited Cocos Island, 300 miles off the coast of Costa Rica. This is the first time in the 150 year history of the exhibition that the Gold Medal has been awarded for a natural history image. Richard received his Gold Medal in June from the President of the Society when the exhibition opened in London. For Richard this occasion has been made even more special because the University’s Peninsula Arts has been chosen to be one of only seven national venues for the exhibition. It will run from 26th November to 11th January in the Cube3 Gallery, Portland Square Building, the very building where Richard has his office. Also in the gallery will be the International Retrospective Print Exhibition, which illustrates the importance and historical diversity of the RPS over the last 150 years. Richard who is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, has had work included in numerous international, national and regional exhibitions. He has received other awards from the RPS as well as from the Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP) and other organisations. Some other examples of his exhibited work can be seen here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Richard has received additional publicity on the BBC Devon website, The People and the Daily Mail. |
