You don’t have to go far to find which Tourism, Transport and Travel students are the most satisfied in the country! (September 2007)
Tourism, Transport and Travel students are a very satisfied lot here in Plymouth! The National Student Survey (NSS) asks final year students to provide feedback on their courses. It is a national initiative that has been conducted annually since 2005. The survey runs across all publicly funded Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The survey goes out by e-mail to students in the early part of the year and the results are published in the summer.

This year 82% of students in the University of Plymouth surveyed responded positively to the question “Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course." But it is our group of students on the Tourism, Travel and Transport programmes who have found their time here most satisfying. The University tops the national league where 96% of our students studying on our Tourism, Shipping and Logistics and Supply Chain management courses were satisfied with their time here in Plymouth.
Dr John Dinwoodie, Head of the International Shipping and Logistics Group, ascribes the student satisfaction to the same values that external examiners of the Maritime Business programme have identified over the years
“Excellent staff commitment, highly qualified staff that are current in their disciplines and have great attention to detail. They are a committed programme team working to develop the subject for the benefit of the students and industry in general.”

Dr Paul R Brunt, Head of Marketing, Tourism and Hospitality puts the student response down to a number of significant factors....
"We are absolutely delighted with this result! We have worked really hard as a group to ensure that our students get the best value we can offer. The staff are completely dedicated, often giving up their own time to supervise field trips, and we try to get as much input from guest speakers and industry as possible."
Dr Philip Gibson, the Principal Lecturer and Programme Manager for Hospitality Management, said that his team were -
"very pleased that the Hospitality and Cruise Management students have acknowledged their high level of satisfaction with our programmes. Hospitality is an important business activity worldwide providing one in ten jobs. To be a manager in this industry and in the related cruise industry requires particular skills, abilities and levels of knowledge. Our students at the University of Plymouth are particularly well well prepared to take advantage of these growing opportunities."
Full details of the survey will be published on the UNISATS website later this month.
