Peninsula College of Medicine and DentistryMedicine in the 21st century is a rewarding career. Today there is keen political and social focus on the National Health Service with a drive to reform in response to the changing demands of the healthcare needs of our society and the individuals within it. Reform in the NHS is dependent on healthcare staff, their attitudes and expertise. The Peninsula Medical School (within the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry) aims to develop a new approach to medical education that nurtures the skills and abilities required by doctors of the future who can become agents of change within the NHS. Tomorrow’s doctors must be caring and compassionate and understand the social context of medical practice. Students at Peninsula benefit from state of the art facilities and are involved in patient health from week one of the programme, gaining hands-on community experience in a wide range of healthcare settings. Important clinical skills are taught within a curriculum that integrates science and medicine. There is a robust partnership with the NHS and the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, to provide a practical and academically rigorous undergraduate programme. Undergraduate teaching occurs within a research rich environment. Medical education research from around the world has informed the development of a curriculum in line with the requirements of the modern healthcare professional. Research is a vital part of the School’s activities and is carried out in the field of biomedical research, clinical education and health services research, areas which map NHS needs and priorities. Students spend the first two years of their degree programme at either the University of Exeter or the University of Plymouth (allocated on a random basis). Students then change location in their third year and move into a hospital based setting. Locations include the Primary Care Trusts in Truro, Barnstaple and Torbay. The facilities provided at both campuses are excellent. Medical students have access to dedicated IT suites and to a state of the art Clinical Skills Resource Centre where the fundamental skills of medicine are learnt and practiced including venupuncture, injections and suturing.
