Role

Qualifications & background

I joined the Department in October 2000. My undergraduate years were spent in Sheffield and I went on to train in clinical psychology at Oxford University, where I subsequently took my D.Phil. I then worked for several years in the pharmaceutical industry with Merck Sharp and Dohme, conducting research into Alzheimer's disease and the neuropharmacology of memory. Following this I developed a career in clinical neuropsychology, first at St.James's University Hospital, Leeds, then at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield and finally, briefly, with Bradford Hospitals NHS Trust. During this time I also held academic appointments at the universities of Birmingham and Sheffield.

Research interests

Neuropsychology: especially disorders of emotion, social cognition and self-awareness. In a nutshell, I am interested in how the brain constructs a self and how the self responds to the deconstruction of its brain. This has led to research across different neurological, psychiatric and neurodevelopmental domains, including schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy and acquired brain disorder.
