Professor Phillips R&D orbits digital architectures and transmedia publishing, and is manifest in two key research projects: Arch-OS [www.arch-os.com] (now reincarnated in Perth WA in the form of the i-500 [www.i-500.org]), an ‘Operating System’ for contemporary architecture (’software for buildings’) and the LiquidPress [www.liquidpress.net] which explores the evolution and mutation of publishing and broadcasting technologies.

These projects and other work can be found on the i-DAT web site at: http://www.i-dat.org.

i-DAT is a Research Group that acts as a catalyst for creative innovation across the fields of Art, Science and Technology, facilitating regional, national and international collaborations and cultural projects. As a networked organisation and ‘cultural broker’ i-DAT’s transdisciplinary agenda fosters ‘open innovation’ and knowledge exchange between companies, institutions, communities and individuals. i-DAT is developing new ‘tools’ for production, dissemination and participation that challenge traditional models of creation and consumption, and embrace the shifting relationships between audiences and cultural producers.

Research interests

Current research is supported through private and public sector grant funding. R&D orbits digital architectures, transmedia publishing and emergent media. These are manifest in the development of two major projects:

.............................................................................................................................

Arch-OS: an operating system for architectures. It represents an evolution in intelligent architecture, interactive art and ubiquitous computing. Arch-OS [http://www.arch-os.com] has been developed to interact with the inhabitants of buildings in order to provide dynamic temporal information on their activities and impact on the environment. In the process of realising these behaviors Arch-OS generates dynamic data models of the complex interactions within a building.
.............................................................................................................................

&

.............................................................................................................................

LiquidPress: The Liquid Press responds to the changing world of publishing as it moves from paper/TV/WWW/CD to digital generative media forms, and from fixed to live and dynamic media. The development of 'liquid' content is primarily based on experience gained from a series of integrated publishing/broadcasting experiments explored the integration of print, internet/world wide web and interactive satellite transmissions. The Liquid Press explores the convergence of these technologies and the kinds of collaborative spaces that emerge through human interaction within them. The impact of these activities have been seen in a number of real world Knowledge Transfer projects (KTP (TCS) and are being further developed through a range of academic, research and commercial projects.

The key research question for the i-DAT Research Group
which Phillips leads is: what is the transformative potential of digital technology and how particular qualities can manifest themselves through rigorous methodologies, transdisciplinarity and ‘practice’ (both applied and critical).

i-DAT explores the transformative potential of digital technology (hardware & software), both as a catalyst for the evolution of cultural forms and as a substrate for transdisciplinary research and innovation.

i-DAT contributes to UoA63 (RAE) research in the Faculty of Technology, through the Centre of Media, Art & Design Research. Until August 2009 i-DAT was located in the Faculty of Technology as a component of the A∑TEC (the Art Science Technology Research Consortium). This was a strategic alliance of: CAiiA, the Centre for Advanced Inquiry into the Integrative Arts, the hub of the Planetary Collegium (with nodes in Zurich and Milan); the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research (ICCMR); Transtechnology Research; the Art and Social Technologies Research Group. There is significant interaction across these groups through collaborative project work and PhD supervision.

i+DAT[A] exposes the ways in which data is instituted in a variety of contexts, de-fragmenting issues related to the production, control and distribution of digital media across the cultural industries.

The i+DAT[A] Exposition seeks to de-fragment practices and digital activities across the public and private sectors that define the cultural industries within the South West region and beyond. Partitioned into a series of seminars, practical workshops, presentations and screenings, the exposition provides a rich environment for focused critical discussion on the future of digital media.

Dates: Tuesday 9 to Saturday 13 April 2002

Location: Sherwell Centre and Babbage Building, University of Plymouth, UK

wOw, WithOut Walls Redefining the City

Symposia and Exhibition. Plymouth Arts Centre.

Saturday 19 June at 2pm in The Plymouth Arts Centre Cinema, a group of eminent architects and new media artists will gather to discuss the impact of digital technologies on the shape and form of the 'city'. The guest speaker will explore everyday human interaction with the built and information environments of the modern city, and examine the role of architecture and the arts within the city of the future. The integration of digital interactive multimedia with architecture is a challenge to both practices and suggests a new field of activity: the 'Architecture of Cyberspace'.

Speakers: Alex de Rijke, Professor Roy Ascott, Professor Adrian Gale, Dirk Hansen, Mike Phillips

The Exhibition: Inspired by Plymouth Arts Centre's lottery proposal for a new 'wired' Arts and Architecture Centre, wOw is an adventurous exploration of the future of such cultural spaces / places, and the cities that sustain them. The lottery bid envisions a building that integrates new media technologies into the fabric of its structure, and anticipates a fusion of creative cultural activity into the information matrix of the city. Whilst Plymouth is being rewired for the digital information age, the future of its Arts and Architecture is being modelled within the wOw exhibition. wOw is the result of a collaboration between artists, architects and students from Brazil, Germany and the UK.

INTERSTICES Symposium, ‘The Architecture of Consciousness’, Port Eliot House, Cornwall.

Following the CAiiA Conference at UWCN, a Symposium on new developments in interactive design and cyber architecture, set in the context of Consciousness Reframed, was organised by STAR at the University of Plymouth in St Germans at the historic Port Eliot House. The Symposium explored the impact of digital technologies on the institutions, locations and structures of cultural production and consumption, and covered such topics as: new media arts and research centres, educational structures, interactive publishing/broadcasting, intelligent environments and public interfaces.

The Symposium gave participants the opportunity to share and discuss the institutional and architectural implications of the issues raised at the CAiiA Conference. The STAR Symposium was largely visually-based, utilising interactive multimedia systems (CD ROM, video, projection and the Internet), offering the opportunity to construct, present and view new developments and proposals in a number of cultural, educational and technological contexts from around the world.

The Seminar took place on 24 and 25 August (a Symposium meal will be held at Port Eliot House on the evening of Sunday 23). Transportation from the CAiiA Conference site at the University of Wales, Newport to the STAR Symposium accommodation at the University of Plymouth's Robbins Conference Centre will be arranged for participants. Inexpensive individual en-suite accommodation will be available at the Centre.

Professor Phillips R&D orbits digital architectures and transmedia publishing, and is manifest in two key research projects: Arch-OS [www.arch-os.com] (now reincarnated in Perth WA in the form of the i-500 [www.i-500.org]), an ‘Operating System’ for contemporary architecture (’software for buildings’) and the LiquidPress [www.liquidpress.net] which explores the evolution and mutation of publishing and broadcasting technologies.

i-DAT is a Research Group that acts as a catalyst for creative innovation across the fields of Art, Science and Technology, facilitating regional, national and international collaborations and cultural projects.
