Plymouth Sustainable Enterprise Week - a celebration of enterprise, sustainability and new ideas across the city. Every November, the City of Plymouth and Plymouth University – the Enterprise University - hosts a programme packed full of events to contribute to what’s now known as Global Entrepreneurship Week - a worldwide movement to unleash enterprising talent and turn ideas into reality. Plymouth Sustainable Enterprise Week 2011 was a part of the many celebrations being held for the University's 150th anniversary !

Monday 14 November
Breaking into Media and Devon & Cornwall Royal Television Society Awards Breaking Into Media 2011 was again a great success with over 300 students attending the event. Jeremy Hibbard from Televisionary, Rick Horne from Twofour, Dimitri Houtart from BBC South West, Bill Martin from South West Media Group, Jane Blanchard from Blanchard Media, Denis Gartside from the Royal Television Society and Siobhan Robbie from Silverstream TV hosted the first session ‘Getting In and Getting On’. This session aimed to show what is expected from graduates when they apply for jobs in the media and what to do once they’re in. Presenters helped with the structures of CVs, explained the selection progress and stressed the importance of work or voluntary experience.
After lunch it was the start of the Devon & Cornwall Student Royal Television Awards presented by the chair of judges Sam Smith from BBC. The winners included Plymouth University student work 'Get a Grip on me' in the entertainment section.
The last part of the day was a chance for students to meet the team behind Channel 5’s hit series, The Hotel Inspector . The panel included Neil Edwards, Executive Producer, Bernie Schaeffer who was key in developing new talents Alex Polizzi as Ruth Watson’s replacement, and Tom Weller who assists the team on location with filming of the 16 hotels.
Plymouth University are pleased to announce that Breaking Into Media was awarded High Impact Event status 2011 from the Global Entrepreneurship Week Team!

The One Stop Ideas Shop
The One Stop Ideas Shop took place again, giving individuals a chance to talk through their business ideas in a confidential setting. The One Stop Ideas Shop is a monthly workshop given by the University's Enterprise Solutions Team designed to provide specialist information and guidance on protecting a business idea or product. Specialist guidance is available from a variety of experts including PATLIB UK, Plymouth University, NJ Akers & Co Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys and Tamar Science Park.

Launch of the Cornwall Enterprise Programme The Cornwall Enterprise Programme was launched by Lord Digby Jones with special guests Laura Tenison MBE , Founder and MD of JoJo Maman Bebe . The day also saw the Enterprise Heroes event where internationally renowned speakers and local enterprise heroes shared their business experiences.

National Student Finance Day Over 85 people including students, parents and carers visited the campus for National Student Finance Day to find out more about the details surrounding student finance for 2012 entry to university. The evening event included a presentation of information on the new student funding package, with a stand outside for students, parents and carers to gather information needed to help them with the decision of going to University.

'Rebranding Sri-Lanka – Lessons Learnt' Presented by Mr Srilal Miththapala Mr Srilal Miththapala, the immediate Past President of the Tourist Hotels Association in Sri Lanka, and the Director of SWITCH ASIA Programme presented to University staff and students on Rebranding Sri Lanka and Greening Sri Lankan Hotels. He spoke very openly about the good and the bad experiences he has had with this fascinating project. |

The Herald Youth Awards The Herald Youth Awards took place again this year celebrating outstanding achievements of young people in the city. The awards received dozens of nominations making it more difficult than ever to pick this year’s winners, indeed it was impossible to decide between finalists.
The quality of this year's entrants was underlined by the joint award to Curtis Young and Archie Barton, the winners of The Herald Young Hero Award, who recieved a standing ovation from the audience.
Winners for Plymouth University included Toby Cadenhead for the Young Volunteer Award and Samuel Coumbe, Young Social Entrepreneur Award. The students' Union Music for Megan Team were shortlisted as Fundraising Project of the Year.
All of those who won awards or were shortlisted, demonstrated that the city of tomorrow will be in good hands.

Wednesday 16 November
FLUX This fast-paced business competition took place again this year at Foot Anstey's offices, Sutton Harbour.The teams of Plymouth University students had a busy day working on business ideas but the eventual winners were the Advocates with their business idea Breakwater. Their idea is to focus on maritime events in Plymouth and bring more events, such as the America’s Cup to the city. Individual prizes were awarded to Lucy Nash, Kerry Jameson, Francesca Ford and Danielle Lowther for standing out to the business experts with great presentation skills.`
Bill Rammel attended the event and spoke about how students truly demonstrate that Plymouth University is the Enterprise University, and how we are pleased to support the Advocates in the national finals of Flux from 29-30 March 2012 when our students will compete for the national title and £3,000.

Sri Lanka – Towards a Sustainable Tourism Destination, Presented by Mr Srilal Miththapala This presentation on how the EU funded project ‘Greening Sri Lankan Hotels’ assists hotels to become more sustainable allowed Mr Miththapala to promote Sri Lanka as a low carbon footprint destination through improving waste, water and energy management practices. Mr Miththapala is attached to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka as Project Director/Consultant. |

Thursday 17 November - National Social Enterprise Day!
A Celebration of Social Enterprise Professor Wendy Purcell, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive was delighted to officially launch the Social Enterprise University Enterprise Network (SE-UEN) which Plymouth University is leading on behalf of the UK's Higher Education institutions and the National Council for Enterprise Educators (NCEE). Also launching the UEN was Julian Beer, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Regional Enterprise), Judith Reynolds, Plymouth University Governor and Michelle Virgo, Director of Plymouth Social Enterprise Network. Jacob King, a student in graphic design at Plymouth University designed the logo for the SE-UEN and won an iPad to help with his design work. His three coloured logo was inspired by the SE-UEN's three statement policy with the triangle, being the strongest shape, representing the future of the UEN. After the launch, a well attended Social Enterprise Fair enabled a number of social enterprises to exhibit and explain more about their businesses. Among the groups were Memory Matters, which deals with therapeutic approaches to memory loss and dementia and Routeways, which manages a range of projects to enhance the social and economic wellbeing of communities. Present from the University was UPSU, Formation Zone, ISSR and Enterprise Solutions. The Social Enterprise Fair celebrated this burgeoning sector and the mutually beneficial partnership opportunities emerging through engagement with our staff, students and community.
During the social enterprise fair the University's Allotment was launched by Jenny Bushrod, Andrew Robinson, Lesley Coulton and Linda Morris. The aim of the University allotment is to get staff and students involved with growing their own food, contributing to the Plymouth Food Charter and to Plymouth University's Sustainability agenda. The University has a team of student and staff volunteers who have helped transform the site from brambles , to a haven for growing food. Western Morning News Inaugural Business Awards A number of people hot-tailed it from Plymouth's Christmas lights switch-on to the first Western Morning News Business Awards at St Mellion International Resort, showcasing the achievements of companies across the region . Plymouth University were proud sponsors of the Innovation and Best New Business Awards the winners of which were Ashwoods Automotive and Real Visual respectively. The University was also delighted that one of the first winners in round one of the Regional Growth Fund, launched earlier this year on campus with Vince Cable MP, was University spin-out company ICO3, based at Tamar Science Park.

The ‘Hot Seat’ Interview Competition This challenging interview competition saw over 60 Plymouth University students taking part in a series of ten minute interviews by a selection of 25 industry professionals. Before the competition students were invited to apply for a graduate position with the fictitious company 'Hot Seat Inc' submitting their CV and covering letter. In the afternoon, after the experts votes, 3 students were selected to be interviewed live on stage.
1st place went to Danielle Lowther, 2nd to Josh Lintern and 3rd to Stephanie Georgiou. Three other prizes of £25 were given to the best scoring non-finalists who were Chelsey Hoefkens, Samantha Richardson and Adam Simmons.

Friday 18 November
Plymouth University Inter-Schools Business Challenge Run jointly by Plymouth Business School and the Faculty of Arts, this competition is for local schools and includes product design and business planning activity , culminating in presentations and prize-giving . A fun day of learning, including having meetings with ‘Experts’ - Plymouth University lecturers and business people from well-known local companies.

Plymouth Biz Event, Plymouth Guildhall Local people considering starting up a business, already in business or seeking to grow, came to the Plymouth Biz event in Plymouth Guildhall to access free advice and guidance from organisations such as Outset Plymouth, HM Revenue and Customs, Plymouth City Council, Prince's Trust, Working Links, Job Centre Plus, Plymouth University and Business Information Point. This third such event, with a farmers market outside, proved very popular indeed.

Lord Caradon Lecture, The Politics of Optimism: Government Policy in the 21st Century The Lord Caradon Lectures Trust was established to celebrate the life and work of Hugh Mackintosh Foot, Lord Caradon (1907-1990). It aims to extend knowledge of international affairs and tolerance of other ideologies, races and religions, primarily through a series of annual lectures. This lecture at Plymouth University was presented by Dr Anthony Seldon , an expert on contemporary British history, the Headmaster of Wellington College and the author or editor of more than 25 books on contemporary history, politics and education. After the lecture and question period, guests were invited to a reception and buffet to meet Dr Seldon.
