PROFESSIONAL DIVER TRAINING AS PART OF YOUR DEGREE
Every year, approximately 160 successful applicants enrol on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Professional SCUBA diver training course, after completing a selection programme which comprises a stringent aptitude test, interview and detailed medical assessment. |
WHAT DOES THE DIVING OPTION MODULE INCLUDE?
Stage 1
The first year incorporates many safety and life skills students need to work in the marine environment, which are externally accredited. These include:
- Manual Handling
- Oxygen Administration
- Health and Safety Executive (HSE) First Aid at Work (STCW A-VI / 1-3)
- Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Power Boat level 2
- Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Sea Survival (STCW A-VI / 1-1)
- MCA Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (SCTW A- VI / 1-4)
- RYA / MCA VHF and Global Maritime Distress Safety System
- Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) Fire Awareness (STCW A-VI / 1-2)
- Try Dive
Standards of Training Certification & Watchkeeping (STCTW) Is a basic requirement for training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers on an international level.
Stage 2
The second year is incorporated into the academic module and, if successful with the basic training, will lead to the adventurous and challenging HSE Professional SCUBA course, accredited by the HSE. This allows students to work professionally underwater. The course incorporates both scientific and engineering skill based modules.
The Marine Biology students carry out this training in a slightly different way to other degree courses. They gain a recreational diving qualification in their first year if not already qualified, and then complete the 4 week HSE Professional SCUBA Conversion Course over the summer months. Traditionally on the last dive of the course students wear fancy dress!
Once qualified, students have the opportunity to dive in the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) right next to the Diving & Marine Centre during the rest of their time with Plymouth University. Quite often students are taken on by the NMA on a part time basis as aquarists; occasionally some stay and continue working there.
We are the only university in the country to offer this unique and well sought after qualification as part of the degree course. The qualifications students achieve allow them to work (and get paid) as a diver anywhere in the world.
