Children with a Parent in Prison Conference: Impact, Issues, Practice and Policy

The Sherwell Centre,
Plymouth University, United Kingdom

Monday 2nd April 2012

Approximately 160,000 children have a parent in prison in the UK.  Research, both nationally and internationally, has shown that children who have a parent in prison are more likely than any other group of children to face significant disadvantages, are more likely to come from families with complex needs and are less likely to meet child well-being indicators. They are often invisible in their schools and communities and receive little support or recognition of the challenges they face.

This innovative one day conference, a collaboration between Plymouth University and Barnardo's, brought together researchers, policy-makers, practitioners, children and families to explore the issues in some depth and to critically examine practice and policy responses.  The day was truly unique as alongside presentations from leading national figures there was a performance from a local theatre group, Young Company TR2 Theatre Royal Plymouth, about children’s experiences.
