As the enterprise university we are committed to social responsibility and responsible business practice. We work hard to support schools, not-for-profit, voluntary and community groups with an extensive programme of community and public engagement including:

Widening access and participation for under-represented groups:

Community outreach
  • Working with target schools and providing financial support for students in line with our Access agreement
  • Managing Aimhigher within the Peninsula Area
  • Undertaking community outreach activity

Supporting and enhancing community and voluntary sector activity through the involvement of staff and student volunteering:

Student volunteers
  • Promoting student community based learning and action research
  • Providing student volunteering opportunities through the Students' Union Volunteering in Plymouth (ViP) programme and the university's Active in Community (AiC) programme, enhancing student employability
  • Advertising volunteer vacancies through the free on-line vacancy service Gradsouthwest
  • Providing staff volunteering opportunities, linked with AiC and the university's HR strategy

Staging public events and providing access to university services and facilities for public, community and voluntary group activity:

Roland Levinsky Building
  • Hosting community events on campus such as the Mutley and Greenbank Festival, Open House and the Shekinah Mission awards ceremony.
  • Encouraging community use of the Roland Levinsky Building and other university facilities
  • Peninsula Arts, the university's public events programme which for 2009 includes contributing to the city's celebration of Darwin 200
  • Offering advice and guidance and a range of continuing professional development opportunities for individuals working in public, charity, community and voluntary organisations

Determining the social and economic impact of university activity on the community, and providing community and voluntary group access to funded research to support intelligence gathering and future funding proposals:

The Green Agenda
  • Promoting and funding the university's annual Community Research Awards
  • Providing socio-economic research and intelligence for informed policy and decision making through SERIO - our Socio-Economic Research and Intelligence Observatory
  • Advancing the region's sustainability agenda in partnership with our wider community

Our membership of Business in the Community reflects our commitment to responsible business practice and working with the community.
